CPC 04 2005 Yeni ara In 1933, Dornier thought it would enter the market as well, and started the design of a fast twin-engine plane in response to a Lufthansa tender for a six-passenger mail plane. The result was the Do 17. In order to compete with planes like the He 70, the Do 17 was made as small as possible in cross section to reduce drag. Night fighter version called Kauz III. 20 aircraft converted from B-1 and B-4 versions with Do 17 Z-10 "Kauz II" nose-equipped with IR searchlight for the Spanner infrared detection system. Do 215 B-5s were armed with four 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns grouped above the IR light and two 20 mm MG FF cannon in the lower nose.

The preferred nightfighters were the Messerschmitt Bf 110 and Junkers Ju 88C-2/C-4 but there would also be two versions of the Do 17 used as nightfighters – the Z-7 Kauz I and the Z-10 Kauz II (‘Kauz’ translated as ‘Screech Owl’). The glazed nose was removed from a Do 17 Z-3 and replaced by the nose from a Ju 88C-2/C-4.
These aircraft, serials 102/17 and 103/17, were the only machines to receive the F.I designation[10] and could be distinguished from subsequent aircraft by a slight convex curve of the tailplane's leading edge. The two aircraft were sent to Jastas 10 and 11 for combat evaluation, arriving at Markebeeke, Belgium on 28 August 1917.
